It is nice to live in a gated community, until the power goes off and the gate remains closed. Recently residents had problems getting out to go to work when power failures in the area kept the gates shut. There also may be problems with police/fire being delayed in their responses during bad weather. It is unlikely that anything can be done about this.
Our gates are normally open 8-5 M-F and operate via clicker, keypad or card the rest of the time.
